Or proof that tow ratings mean you can tow up to that rating without fiery death!

Looks over loaded with that rear suspension sag.

I don’t think any SUV can do a fifth-wheel, though.

No, they can’t. The frame could take it but being an SUV and such they don’t really have a spot for a hitch. A 1/2 truck could but an HD would definitely be the better option for these, beefier frame, suspension, and diesel option. (Dodge’s small diesel doesn’t have that good of a tow rating.)

Most people dramatically overestimate the type of vehicle they need for towing, and that usually comes from a previous bad towing experience. You would be surprised how much difference a good load-levelling hitch will make, especially one that includes sway control. Case in point, you would be surprised how well my Tahoe pulls after some slight modification; biggest transmission cooler B&M makes, Air Lift air spring inserts, VERY good trailer brakes, and a load-levelling hitch with sway control. Tows like a dream.

I’d like to see a trailer meant to 5th-wheel to the roof, contoured to allow the tow vehicle to turn completely around, like so;

You’d need some way of reinforcing that roof mount, but hey, IT’D BE COOL.

Wait, that’s the outback... I thought that was the forester... Isn’t the outback just a trim option on legacy and impreza wagons... where has subaru gone... take me back to the 90s...

All safe and legal as long as you don’t exceed the towing vehicles max towing weight for braked or unbraked as you may lose control of your vehicle but more likely, get pulled over by VOSA (vehicle inspectorate) who will pull you over into a weighing station and may stop you going any further.

That’s an outback. It’s sort of a lifted Legacy, but with a different suspension and uprated drivetrain for moar towings.

Same theory for the Crosstrek, lifted Impreza wagon with uprated diffs for towing. Granted, the XV is limited to 1500 lbs, but it's something!

Nah, looks about right. I mean, suspension travel is there so you can make it travel, right?

You just have to watch the weight & hitch load, but it is surprising what non-SUV vehicles can tow.

Sure they can. All you need to do is inflate the tires to 160 psi and add some reinforcement chains to the tailgate so it doesn’t fold.

Turns out my car (1997 Cadillac Deville) was offered with an optional towing package. It only added a transmission cooler and electrical connector and brought towing capacity up to 3900 lbs. Hmm... I am getting “ideas.”

Make sure you find the maximum recommended tongue weight. That is the one big number I would never recommend exceeding, since it revolves around spring and axle capacity. A manufacturer’s “Towing Capacity” is mostly nonsense, until very recently with SAE’s new standard.

Oh heck yeah. Right now I don’t even have a hitch on the car. The only thing this will improve is GVWR. It just makes me happy that it could (if set up properly) tow almost it’s own curb weight from the factory.
